CMPAC UPDATES: Arms Embargo, Unfair Extradition, & Defending Free Speech
This Week’s CMPAC Updates: Arms Embargo, Unfair Extradition & Defending Free Speech
September 17, 2024
CMPAC’s Response to Minister Joly’s Arms Embargo Announcement
September 14, 2024
CMPAC has expressed deep concern over Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly’s recent announcement regarding Canada’s arms embargo on Israel. We believe the government's measures fall short of addressing the severity of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Our opinion piece criticizes the lack of clarity and effectiveness in the proposed suspension of arms permits and calls for a comprehensive, transparent arms embargo. We urge the government to uphold its obligations under the ATT and ensure that Canadian arms do not contribute to the ongoing conflict.
Call to End Unjust Extradition Efforts Against Dr. Hassan Diab
September 14, 2024
CMPAC has condemned further attempts to extradite Dr. Hassan Diab, a Canadian citizen and sociology professor, to France. Despite being released in 2018 after French authorities found insufficient evidence against him, Dr. Diab faces a flawed conviction based on unreliable evidence. Our urgent call to the Canadian government demands the rejection of any further extradition requests, reform of Canada’s Extradition Act, and establishment of independent oversight to protect Canadian citizens from wrongful prosecution and ensure fair treatment under international human rights standards
Support for Amira Elghawaby: Defending Human Rights and Free Speech
September 13, 2024
CMPAC stands firmly with Amira Elghawaby, Canada's Special Representative on Combating Islamophobia, amid recent baseless attacks against her. Our online petition and open letter highlight how these attacks misrepresent Amira’s role and unfairly label her as divisive. We reject the flawed conflation of pro-Palestinian sentiment with antisemitism, which undermines her critical work for unity, inclusion, and human rights. We call on all Canadians to support Amira in her crucial efforts to combat Islamophobia and promote free speech.
CMPAC Condemns Arrest of Palestinian Activist & Mother Samar Alkhdour
September 13, 2024
CMPAC is deeply troubled by the arrest of Samar Alkhdour, a Palestinian activist whose daughter tragically died in Gaza. Samar's arrest followed her public confrontation with Immigration Minister Marc Miller over his inaction and perceived complicity in her daughter’s death. This situation underscores a disturbing trend of increasing anti-Palestinian racism and intimidation of pro-Palestinian advocates. We stand in solidarity with Samar Alkhdour and her right to free speech and expression, demanding that authorities uphold her rights as protected under the Canadian Charter.
Civil Society Coalition Urges Canada to Halt Arms Transfers to Israel
September 9, 2024
CMPAC, alongside various civil society organizations, has called upon the Canadian government to end all arms transfers to Israel. The open letter highlights the devastating impact of these transfers on civilians in Gaza and asserts that Canada's continued export of military goods to Israel violates international obligations under the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). The letter further underscores the urgent need for Canada to align its actions with its commitments to human rights and international law, emphasizing that ongoing arms transfers exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
