CMPAC Updates on Our Advocacy

Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh

Dear CMPAC Followers,

We are pleased to share with you our latest policy work updates, highlighting CMPAC's ongoing efforts to advocate for justice, inclusivity, and the rights of all Muslim Canadians.

CANADIAN POLICY: MUSLIM CONTEXT

CMPAC continues to be active in Canadian policy impacting Muslims living in Canada. Over the past month, we have heavily delved into policy work surrounding controversial bills and proposed by-laws.

CANADA’s ANTI-RACISM STRATEGY

CMPAC’s evaluation of Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy highlights the need for a more nuanced and inclusive approach. Our assessment reveals that the strategy must better address various forms of racism, including Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism. We call for comprehensive measures that not only combat all forms of racism but also promote equity and justice for all communities across Canada.

SUBMISSION OF ISLAMOPHOBIA BRIEF TO THE STANDING COMMITTEE ON JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS

In our latest policy brief submitted to the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, CMPAC addresses the escalating challenges of Islamophobia and anti-Palestinian racism in Canada. Highlighting recent events and historical contexts, our submission underscores the urgent need for legislative and policy reforms to combat systemic discrimination. We propose comprehensive measures aimed at fostering inclusivity, safeguarding rights, and promoting equitable treatment for Muslim and Palestinian communities.

CONTROVERSIAL PROPOSED VAUGHAN BY-LAW

Previous Work on the Vaughan By-law

Previously, CMPAC led a campaign on the city of Vaughan’s newly proposed By-law which threatens to severely impact our community by stifling protests, suppressing free speech, and unfairly targeting certain groups. This overreaching legislation undermines democratic rights and lacks adequate community consultation.

Next, CMPAC has issued an open letter to Vaughan Mayor Del Duca and Members of Vaughan City Council on thesignificant issues surrounding the proposed By-law to Protect Vaughan’s Vulnerable Social Infrastructure. In our review of the proposed By-law, we have identified several key areas that warrant careful reconsideration and broader community engagement.

Statement on Approval and Anticipated Passage of Vaughan By-law

CMPAC expresses deep disappointment in the imminent approval of Vaughan’s By-law to Protect Vulnerable Social Infrastructure, despite extensive efforts to advocate for community engagement and democratic principles. Despite CMPAC’s detailed deputation and requests for postponement to facilitate broader consultation, the by-law is expected to be approved, undermining public trust in democratic processes. This rushed decision risks exacerbating tensions and unfairly targeting communities like Muslims, Arabs, and Palestinians. CMPAC emphasizes the importance of respecting Charter rights and calls for inclusive and transparent consultation frameworks to guide future legislation, ensuring fairness and equity for all.

CONCLUSION of SAMI HAMDI TOUR: WESTERN CANADA

CMPAC’s Western Canada Tour featuring Sami Hamdi has come to an end! The 3-city tour started in Edmonton (June 21), continued to Calgary (June 22), and ended in Vancouver (June 23). We worked at a grassroots level engaging with the different MSA’s to bring a unique, thought-provoking program that addressed Palestinian advocacy. The crowd brought an energy unlike any other and we left with a renewed purpose in our fight for justice for Palestinians.

Make sure to follow us to keep posted on snippets from the tour and for more events in the future!
