Eid Mubarak & Monthly Update

Eid Al-Adha Mubarak

With the blessed days of Eid upon us, CMPAC would like to extend its warmest greetings to all of our subscribers. While we celebrate in safety, we continue to remember the people of Gaza in our prayers. Together, let us stand united in our purpose, striving for a future where the voices of Canadian Muslims are strong and steadfast in the pursuit of justice.

PALESTINE ADVOCACY

Our work at CMPAC centres on advocating for Palestinian justice through grassroots initiatives, advocacy, and policy submissions. On these blessed days of Eid, we reaffirm our efforts with prayers for their well-being, safety, and relief. Their resilience inspires us, and with your support, we hope to continue championing their cause. Here is an overview of CMPAC’s recent statements and initiatives in support of Palestine over the past month.

CANADIAN POLICY: MUSLIM CONTEXT

CMPAC continues to be active in Canadian policy impacting Muslims living in Canada. Over the past month, we have heavily delved into policy work surrounding controversial bills and proposed by-laws.

BILL C-63

CMPAC, as part of a coalition, participated in a joint open letter statement raising concerns about Bill C-63, the Online Harms Act. It highlights concerns that proposed amendments to the Criminal Code and Human Rights Act could severely restrict free expression and burden the Canadian Human Rights Commission. Moreover, it warns of the potential for abuse within the proposed procedural framework, emphasizing the need for transparent public deliberations.

BILL C-70

CMPAC, in solidarity with the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG) and its supporting signatories, co-signed a joint letter raising significant concerns over the expeditious review process of Bill C-70, the Countering Foreign Interference Act, by the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security. It raises concerns on the far-reaching impacts of the proposed legislation on national security, intelligence, and civil liberties, including heightened surveillance and limitations on freedom of expression and association.

BILL 166

CMPAC presents an in-depth assessment of Bill 166, also known as the Strengthening Accountability and Student Supports Act, 2024, recently passed by Ontario’s legislative assembly. This assessment delves into the potential implications of the legislation on academic freedom and freedom of expression within Ontario’s post-secondary institutions.

CONTROVERSIAL PROPOSED VAUGHAN BY-LAW

Past Campaign on Proposed Vaughan By-law

CMPAC led a campaign on the city of Vaughan’s newly proposed By-law which threatens to severely impact our community by stifling protests, suppressing free speech, and unfairly targeting certain groups. This overreaching legislation undermines democratic rights and lacks adequate community consultation.

Open Letter on Proposed Vaughan By-law

CMPAC has issued an open letter to Vaughan Mayor Del Duca and Members of Vaughan City Council on the significant issues surrounding the proposed By-law to Protect Vaughan’s Vulnerable Social Infrastructure. In our review of the proposed By-law, we have identified several key areas that warrant careful reconsideration and broader community engagement.
